Pragmatism is fine in theory, but realistically no elected official can allow sensible governing to stand in the way of political ambitions. In a time when rhetoric trumps reason, there is little chance that a pragmatic approach would garner any public attention, much less political support.

Practically speaking, pragmatism does nothing to excite the American senses, or incite the national discussion. It is therefore of little political value.

Bipartisanship embodies the simple notion that governments are elected to govern, and in order to best serve the interests of the people, compromise is sometime necessary – even between political parties.  Today’s best political minds now realize that with compromise and bipartisan behavior you run the risk of the majority party actually accomplishing something. Allowing the current administration to govern is not in the best interest of those who intend to replace them in the next election.

What happened to bipartisanship?

A forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system, a dramatic and wide-reaching change in the way something works or is organized or in people’s ideas about it.

We in America have been revolting for centuries.  We revolted against the British monarchy, we revolted against agrarian society and even today we are in the midst of our latest revolution against all colors that aren’t green.

During the peacenik revolution of the 60′s we lost our taste for violent revolt * and have since been content to confine our revolutions to fashion, culture, environmentalism, and the occasional Cola war.

* Plausible deniability prevents us for discussing or recognizing America’s interest in any number of ongoing violent revolutions taking place around the globe.

The American flag is a visual representation of our deeply held values of life, liberty and the ever elusive happiness.

We pledge allegiance in this country not to our president, nor to our government, but to our flag.  This is convenient because the flag never let’s us down. It is bipartisan, agnostic, and full of stars and stripes.  We know that the men we elect and the governments they create are fallible and likely to disappoint, but the good old red, white and blue is always reliable, predictable and imbued with no responsibilities or power so it can’t possibly let us down.  Our allegiance is safe – these colors don’t run.

Critics Decry Obama’s ‘Indoctrination’ Plan for Students

The greater number, a subset of a group that makes up more than half of the group.

The majority has always ruled in this country – it’s the American way. It’s how we elect our officials (sort of), it’s how we determine the People’s Choice awards and it’s how we vote losers off the island. But, somewhere along the way, the minority snuck in and changed the equation so that a majority of 100 is now 60.

In the Senate there are currently 41 seated Republicans and 59 seated Democrats. Well anyone can tell that 59 is less than 60, so the majority party no longer enjoys the benefits of having more members than the minority party. And, since the minority party still has less members, they can avoid any responsibility for unpopular policy decided by the majority party that doesn’t have majority status.  No one’s accountable, because neither party really has a majority.  In return for participating in this complex mathematical maneuvering, the majority party is severed from its responsibilities to consider the desires and expectations of the majority of Americans.

To reverse this mathematic anomaly all we need is a super-majority of 67 to agree that a simply majority of 51 is still more than 50.

The point of a congressional majority is to use it, not to keep it.
